General News

• In May, Indeed.com released a report showing that 80% of US tech hiring managers and recruiters say they have hired a coding bootcamp graduate for a tech role, and 99.8% said they would do so again.
• Free Code Camp released their 2017 New Coder Survey where they surveyed over 20,000 people to find out how they are learning to code.
• Java, JavaScript MEAN Stack, and Python are the most in-demand coding languages in developer job listings according to analysis by Coding Dojo.

Choosing a Bootcamp

• The National Consumers League contributed an article in Tech Republic about how to spot a fraudulent bootcamp.
• A Forbes contributor wrote about four reasons not to learn to code.
• Smallbiztrends.com looked at how App Academy’s deferred tuition system is under review in California and New York, where both states require flat tuition rates.

Bootcamp Experiences

• Metro wrote an article about Revature and why they are paying students to learn and offering jobs after the program.
• Washington Post profiles a student studying at Revature in New York and interviews Revature staff about the program.
• Computerworld.com profiles classical musician Andrew Sorensen who went to Coding Dojo then got a job at Expedia. The article also gives a great overview of the bootcamp industry.
• The News & Observer profiled 26-year-old John Mitsch, who couldn’t get a job using his degree. He then went to The Iron Yard, and got a job at Red Hat.
• TechCrunch highlighted Dev Bootcamp student, Mannah Kallon, a former culinary student, gamer, and math teacher from Harlem, NYC.

Diversity

• Backchannel.com published a comprehensive piece on vets learning to code, mentioning veteran and Operation Code founder David Molina, and congressman Kevin McCarthy’s bill to provide $75 million to the VA for a pilot program of technology courses for vets.
• The Northern Virginia Community College Foundation and Northern Virginia Technology Council are sponsoring veterans to go through a $14,000, 12-week coding bootcamp at Uncommon Coders at the Northern VA Community College Woodbridge campus.
• Helio Training in SLC has announced two new scholarships aimed at strengthening diversity in their classes - Women in Tech Scholarship and Veteran Service Scholarship.
• The Washington, D.C. Economic Partnership is partnering with Thinkful and the new Inclusive Innovation Incubator, or In3, to launch Pathway Scholars, a pilot program to prepare underrepresented workers for jobs in tech.
• The Local talked to female students at Swedish coding bootcamp Craft Academy including a former teacher, and a student who wanted to build her own website for her business.
• Bustle profiled some of the women who were awarded the scholarship they are offering for Flatiron School’s online web developer program.
• Hack Reactor released a diversity and inclusion report for their campuses; found that their gender split (25% women) was lower than the industry average (43% women).

New Courses/Campuses/Partnerships

• Lynn University is collaborating with Miami-based coding bootcamp Wyncode Academy to allow bachelor’s degree seeking students to gain immersive web development skills on campus.
• Detroit Mayor, Mike Duggan, in partnership with coding bootcamp, Grand Circus, have announced a free, full-time 10-week bootcamp for Detroit residents over the summer.
• Galvanize is finally opening in NYC, according to NY Biz Journals.
• Trailhead, a non-profit startup accelerator and coworking space in Boise, Idaho, plans to launch an apprenticeship program for aspiring coders. The Idaho STEM Action Center will fund the program with a $200,000 grant.
• The TechnicallyDC website covered Code Writers Workshop, a new workshop specifically aimed at coding bootcamp grads who have started their first job but want to advance their careers.
• Houston Community College will teach the Apple-designed Swift Bootcamp, which is part of a new iOS Coding and Design School.
• Covalence Bootcamp (formerly DepotU) announced the first class at their new Chattanooga campus on Tuesday May 30th.
