This February, coding bootcamps announced $42M in fundraising – and another $110M more if you include money injected into the ISA (Income Share Agreement) industry. As the U.S. continues the attempt to get people back to work, we saw lots of encouraging news about new workforce development programs. And with the rise in university-bootcamp partnerships these days, we’re diving into the pros and cons of this kind of business relationship for universities and bootcamps alike. Plus, we introduce you to the 11 new bootcamps we added to the Course Report directory in February 2021!

$42M IN FEBRUARY FUNDRAISES

• According to EdSurge, Codecademy raised a $40 million Series D round in February led by Owl Ventures – and Codecademy has been profitable for 18 months.
• Crowdfund Insider reports that HyperionDev raised more than £1.8 million through a Crowdcube campaign.
• Crain’s Cleveland explored the recent Tech Elevator acquisition by Stride, which also owns Galvanize and Hack Reactor. 
• Nashville Business Journal reports that CodeX Academy received backing from Grammy award winner Ray J. 

ISAs IN THE NEWS

• Burlington Code Academy closed a $10 million deal in growth financing, which will be used to fund its new income share agreement program offered in partnership with Leif.  
• Austen Allred, CEO of Lambda School, wrote a guest post for the International Business Times arguing in favor of Income Share Agreements.
• TechCrunch reports that Blair has raised $100 million from an undisclosed investor in order to fund its new debt facility Blair Capital. Blair Capital will be used by partner schools and bootcamps to fund their own ISA programs without having to raise their own debt capital.

UPSKILLING & WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS

• EdSurge reported on a huge partnership between Guild Education and 2U. In this partnership, 2U, which owns Trilogy Education, will make its degree programs, short courses, and online coding bootcamps available to Guild Education’s network of employers.
• The Sacramento Bee highlighted how Digital Upskill Sacramento, a 9-week workforce development program based in Sacramento, California has been reskilling those whose jobs were affected by the pandemic. 
• EdSurge writes about the recovering US economy, saying that COVID-19 has widened the skills gap – but also presents an opportunity to close it. 
• TechCrunch says that employers have the opportunity right now to step up to meet colleges and universities halfway by building and providing “last-mile training” for motivated candidates who show general aptitude but lack requisite digital skills and business knowledge.
• NAZ Today reports that throughout the pandemic, Galvanize has been providing COVID-relief assistance to small businesses and entrepreneurs in Arizona. 
• SpaceNews.com reports on a Space Force software boot camp whose graduates are known as the “supra coders.” The goal of the program is to get 400 graduates who will work on space traffic control, satellite operations, and space data analysis.
• Technically Philly reports that LaunchCode is expanding to Philadelphia this year to offer free tech training. 
• TechCrunch reported on a program called Justice Through Code, which is a semester-long coding and interpersonal skills intensive that takes place at Columbia University, and provides alternative paths for people released from incarceration who are reentering society.

NEW BOOTCAMP-UNIVERSITY PARTNERSHIPS

• Higher Ed Dive gave a comprehensive look at the university bootcamp landscape and the nuances of these partnerships between universities and coding bootcamps. 
• Arizona State University has partnered with Chegg in order to offer Thinkful-powered coding bootcamps. 
• QuickStart partnered with University of Texas at Arlington to offer bootcamps in cloud computing, cybersecurity, and data science.
• In partnership with Promineo Tech, the Workforce Training and Continuing Education at College of Eastern Idaho will now begin offering part-time coding bootcamps. 
• Fullstack Academy’s new bootcamp at San Jose State University will help train aspiring cybersecurity and coding professionals in the area.
• Eureka College in Illinois has partnered with Cybint to offer a cybersecurity bootcamp.
• Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Per Scholas is launching a new campus in Pittsburgh with a focus on training those currently underrepresented in tech. 
• Inside Indiana Business reports that Indianapolis-based Eleven Fifty Academy has partnered with Elevate Ventures and the Northeast Indiana Regional Partnership to offer a coding bootcamp in Fort Wayne. 
• Hartford Business reported on how much the University of Connecticut Coding Boot Camp (created in partnership with 2U/Trilogy) is helping the tech talent pool in Connecticut.

OUR FAVORITE BLOG POSTS THIS FEBRUARY

Jess learned a lot while pulling together the cybersecurity career path piece with Springboard curriculum expert and cybersecurity professional Mark Adams. Mark worked his way from an entry-level IT position all the way to a senior-level Chief Security Information Officer, and he has so much good advice on how to keep learning and moving up the cybersecurity career ladder.

This month, Liz worked with Tim Davis, the Chief Academic Officer at LearningFuze to pull together two video tutorials about Git and Github. Git and Version control are the first things that you’ll learn at a coding bootcamp, so these videos are a great opportunity to get a head start!
