Happy Summer! This June, tech hiring was at an all-time high despite news of layoffs and hiring freezes. We caught wind of four workforce developments for aspiring bootcampers in California, Montana, Virginia, and Florida, and three major fundraises in the coding bootcamp and workforce development sphere amounted to $395M. Since the release of the Government Accountability Office report about OPMs, there was talk about next steps, and a new lawsuit concerned with job guarantees at an online bootcamp surfaced from the Washington State Attorney General. 

We saw some impressive milestones in the coding bootcamp world this month:

• Flatiron School celebrated its 10-year anniversary, and announced that they’ve graduated over 10,000 bootcamp students in that decade! 
• Vanderbilt Tech Boot Camps, which have been around since 2019 and are powered by Trilogy, just graduated their first 1,000 students!

$395M IN CODING BOOTCAMP INDUSTRY FUNDRAISES

• EdTechReview reports that the workforce upskilling platform, Guild Education has raised $175M in a Series F funding. 
• Apprenticeship & digital skills training platform Multiverse closed a Series D funding round of $220M, which it will use to expand from the UK into the US. 
• According to TechCabal, Kenyan-based Moringa School closed a pre-series A round which will be used to expand Moringa School’s reach into Ghana and Nigeria. 

THE LATEST ON OPMs AND ISAs

• Higher Ed Dive reached out to OPMs to gauge where they stand on the recent US Government Accountability Office report recommending more oversight over OPM contracts with colleges. 
• Geekwire reported on a lawsuit by Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson against online bootcamp Prehired over its job guarantee.

ARE CODING BOOTCAMPS WORTH IT?

• Gallup dove a bit deeper into its Gallup-2U Boot Camp Graduates Study findings, and determined that 2U bootcamp grads are 4x happier in their tech roles than they were in their pre-bootcamp careers.
• Vox investigated if everyone should learn how to code in order to pivot into a tech career.

4 WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVES & THE TECH HIRING BOOM

• The New York Times spoke with multiple tech recruiters about the continued tech hiring boom. 
• Computer World addressed how this tech talent shortage has pushed many organizations to hire through non-traditional approaches that include coding bootcamps, low-code training, and focusing on population areas outside the norm.
• Golden State Education and Training Grant Program awards $2,500 to Californians who lost their job during the pandemic to help them complete either college or a job training program.
• According to UMT News, the state of Montana continues to help its citizens learn cybersecurity through its program CyberMontana. 
• Through a regional workforce initiative funded by Triumph Gulf Coast, Florida State University Panama City has partnered with SkillStorm to offer tech training.
• MentorWorks announced a paid tech apprenticeship program for individuals from low-income and underserved backgrounds in Virginia in partnership with Blue Ridge Bank in Virginia. 

DIVERSIFYING THE TECH PIPELINE THROUGH CODING BOOTCAMPS

• Happy Pride Month! We’ve rounded up 11 coding bootcamp scholarships for LGBTQ+ folks who are looking to get into tech, and some of these are full tuition scholarships!
• In the Seattle Times, Ada Developers Academy CEO Lauren Sato says since getting the $10M from an “Equality Can’t Wait” challenge, they’ve tripled the size of their staff, moved their Seattle campus to Pioneer Square, and are opening a second campus in Atlanta.
• BeSmartee had a press release about their latest Women in Tech Scholarship cohort in partnership with LearningFuze.
• Pluralsight pledged over $3M to nonprofit partners, such as LaunchCode, Girls Who Code, and Npower through its social impact organization, Pluralsight One.   
• Black Professionals in Tech Network announced the launch of Obsidi Academy, a coding bootcamp for Black-identified individuals in Canada. TD Bank Group is a sponsor of the bootcamp and will hire bootcamp grads from cohorts over the next 3 years. 

11 NEW BOOTCAMPS & 2 NEW CAMPUSES

• Business Insider reports that Meta is offering professional certificate courses through Coursera starting this July. 
• BrainStation announced a new, 35,000-square-foot campus in NYC. (Take the virtual tour!) 
• Quickstart announced a partnership with Georgia South University. 
• News 18 reports that Holberton School has partnered with India-based Jigsaw Academy to launch online certification courses in Full Stack Development.
• VentureBurn reports that Le Wagon is opening a new campus in Cape Town, South Africa. 
• Coding Dojo has partnered with City University of Seattle to offer bootcamp grads a guaranteed admission into the CS programs at the university — Bootcamp students won’t need a STEM-related degree in order to be admitted into the Master in CS program!
